The Century Foundation has a great article on the problems with SSI asset limits.

Basically, SSI limits the amount of assets a recipient of SSI can own to $2000.

The essence of the issue is that SSI is a benefits system, not an insurance system, so it is designed to be limited and kick people out as quickly as possible (“welfare to work”)…

Obviously, this doesn’t make sense for disabled people, but creates a system of “Poverty By Design”.

We need to move to Universal Disability Services Insurance:

      • No Asset Limits
      • No Income Limits
      • No co-pays
      • No marriage penalty
      • No subminimum wage
